The scatter diagram is used to determine whether a qualitative relationship, linear or curvilinear, exists between two continuous or attribute variables. Scatter Diagrams help provide visual evidence of a Cause & Effect Diagram or Matrix to determine if there is more than just a consensus connection between causes and effects.

This scatter diagram shows a strong positive relationship between the number of customers and the number of suppliers; as the number of customers increases, so does the number of suppliers.

Subsequent analysis, such as correlation and regression are typically used to quantify the relationship in a scatter diagram.

Tip The Scatter Diagram does not predict cause and effect relationships; it only shows the strength of the relationship between two variables.
